ASV Member Alex Cherney takes you on a journey of photography discovery. In this session Alex will show you how to take those stunning images of sunset at Lake Tyrrell.

The Astronomical Society of Victoria will host a night under the stars at one of Victorias most stunning natural wonders. Lake Tyrrell is a shallow, salt-crusted depression in the Mallee district of north-west Victoria, in Australia. The name 'Tyrrell' is derived from the local Wergaia word for 'sky'. It is a renowned location for photographers and the perfect location to observe the wonders of the universe.

The ASV will have volunteers on hand with telescopes set up for attendees to view through. You will see planets, nebula, star clusters and galaxies galore!

Learn from one of the best in the business. Award-winning nightscape photographer Alex Cherney, a two-time winner of the international STARMUS astrophotography competition whose images of Lake Tyrrell have featured with National Geographic and The World At Night, will guide you through shooting the night sky with your DSLR on location. You'll cover camera settings, composition, focusing in the dark, and the planning that separates a good night-sky shot from a great one, all under some of the darkest skies in Victoria.

Bring your DSLR and a sturdy tripod, this is long-exposure work. Meeting at the Lake Tyrrell Viewing Platform (Upper Car Park).

The ASV invites you out under a full-blown Milky Way for a nightscape imaging session with a twist. The painted silos, lit by the galaxy itself, are exactly the kind of shot people haul out DSLRs and tripods for. AstroPuNk, our resident Mobile Phone Nightscape Imaging Specialist, reckons you can nail it with the phone already in your pocket, and he'll show you how.

He'll walk you through the settings, the composition, and the sneaky tricks that make a phone punch well above its weight after dark, turning giant silo art and a blazing Milky Way into a frame you'll actually want to print.

Giant works of art below, the galaxy overhead, and you in the middle making it look effortless.

Bring your phone. A tripod with phone holder is a must, this is long-exposure work and nobody's hands are that steady. Bring your curiosity too.
